Usually no, but your city decides, so confirm before you order. Building permits attach to work that changes the structure: resizing an opening, moving a header, replacing a jamb. A security screen door mounts to the door frame that is already there and leaves the opening as it was, which is why most Orange County homeowners never pull one. Two things do have rules regardless. If the screen goes over a bedroom emergency escape window it must release from inside without a key, tool, or special knowledge, under Section R319 of the 2025 California Residential Code (Section R310.4 in earlier editions). And if you are in an HOA, architectural approval is a separate process from a permit and is required far more often than a permit is. One call to your city building department settles the permit question in a couple of minutes.

It fastens to the existing door jamb, the structural frame your current door already hangs in, not to the wall surface. That is why stucco, brick, block and siding openings are all routine and why the install does not alter the structure. Odd conditions are exactly what the measure is for: a bowed jamb, a security screen over an out-of-square opening, or a threshold that has settled all get identified in those 45 minutes rather than on install day.

Yes. It is fastened to the jamb rather than built into the wall, so it comes off and leaves fastener holes in the frame to fill, not construction to undo. Worth knowing if you are weighing this against something permanent like window bars or a wrought iron gate, which are far harder to reverse. If you rent, get your landlord's written agreement first, because the door attaches to their frame.

Warranty first, then a quote. The written terms are a 10-year manufacturer powder-coating color warranty on mesh and panels; 1 year on hardware. That covers the finish and the components, not accidental damage, so a door someone reverses into is a repair we quote rather than a warranty claim. Because the mesh is a woven 316 stainless panel inside a frame rather than a spline-and-roller insect screen, it is not the kind of repair a mobile screen van re-rolls in the driveway.

Measure the width and height of the existing door frame in three places each, top, middle and bottom for width, and both sides plus the center for height. If your six numbers agree within about a quarter of an inch, the opening is square and standard. If they do not, the opening is out of square, which is common in older Orange County houses and is handled at fabrication rather than being a problem.
