Repair the screen door, or upgrade it?
The answer depends on the frame, not the mesh. Here is how to tell.
The short answer: if the frame is straight and square, repair it - new insect mesh is a hardware-store afternoon, and we say that as a company that sells doors. When repair is the right call
A screen door earns a repair when the bones are good. Torn or sagging insect mesh in a frame that still sits square is the classic case: a roll of mesh, a spline roller, and a free hour will fix it, and several Orange County outfits will even do it in your driveway if you would rather not. The same logic covers a sliding screen that just needs new rollers, a latch that has worn out, or a pet-scuffed panel on a door you otherwise like. None of that justifies a new door, ours included.
The repeat-repair loop
Repairs stop making sense when they start repeating. Sun-brittled fiberglass mesh tears again the season after you replace it. A bent aluminum frame never quite re-squares, so the door drags, gaps, and pops its corners loose no matter how carefully it is adjusted. New rollers cannot help a slider whose frame is out of true. By the second or third fix you are paying for the same repair on a schedule - the door is telling you it is finished, one part at a time.

A security screen door is not a sturdier insect screen - it is a different product that happens to look like one. Doors are a decade-long purchase. We would rather earn yours the year you actually need it - the worth-it question has a real answer, and it is not always yes.

Does Daylight Steel repair screen doors or replace torn mesh?
No - we measure, build, and install new security screen doors, and we would rather say that plainly than book a visit that wastes your afternoon. For a torn insect screen in a sound frame, a hardware store spline kit or a local mobile rescreening service is the right call, and either will cost a small fraction of any new door.
Can you add security mesh to my existing screen door frame?
No, and we would talk you out of it if we could. Security mesh works as a system: high-tensile 316 stainless weave, a frame rigid enough to hold it, mesh clamped into that frame, and a lock throwing into solid structure. Clamp strong mesh into a light insect-screen frame and the frame becomes the weak link - you pay for security and get the strength of the original door.
When is repairing a screen door not worth it?
Three reliable signs: the frame is bent or out of square so the door drags or gaps no matter what you do, the corners or hinges are working loose for the second time, or you are on your second or third mesh replacement because sun-brittled screen keeps tearing. Repairs fix mesh. They cannot fix a frame that has finished its useful life.

A determined dog and an insect screen have exactly one possible ending, so a third rescreen is usually a donation. Woven 316 stainless mesh shrugs off claws and full-speed dogs, which is why pet households are our most common upgrade. One honest caveat: we do not cut pet flaps into security panels, because that voids the manufacturer warranty - we help you plan pet access another way.
What happens to my old screen door if I upgrade?
We haul it away on request as part of the installed price. The measure, the written quote, the install, and the haul-away are all included in the flat number - there is no second invoice hiding behind the first.
